Went to Nashville, Tennessee for the Country Music Marathon and Half. Went with United Airline. A great flight. Only half full so lots of room to spread out. Watched 3 films on the way out and 2 on the way back. The best were Revolutionary Road and Seven Pounds.
There were 30,000 in the Marathon and Half. Even though the race started early it was very hot. Temperatures went up to 85 degs. Due to to heat I took the half causiously. There were trees at the side of the road in the first 8 miles which shaded some of the course. After 8 it became more difficult but I was running well and passed a lot of runners so pushed on and was pleased to finish 1:32:10. 137th out of 22749 in the half and 4th in my age group (out of 665).
Jack came to this race to do his 200th Marathon and his 50th State of America. He ran in costume with support from Manic (Jim) Jack raised about £3000 for Grove House. For more details see http://www.justgiving.com/jackbrooks1
In the evening there was a concert for the participents. About 10,000 turned up to see the Carter Twins, Ashton Shepherd and headline act Billy Currington. The show was great and Billy Currington pleased the crowd by perfoming an encore as long as his main set.
In the evennings we went to various bars. There were bands in most bars. One we went to was the Wildhorse Saloon which had full size models of horses all over the place; siiting by the bars, on the ceilings etc.
Being the capitol of Country Music we visited The Grand Ole Opry, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and lots of music shops. Also had the TV permanently on GAC (Great American Country) (www.GACTV.com) Picture left is our group from left to right Me, Warren, Jack and Manic (Jim). For more photos from Nashville see PHOTOS page. SATURDAY 11 to TUESDAY 14 APRIL
Went to Guernsey for the Easter Runs. Had a cold for the previous 2 weeks. Watched the relay on Sunday. On Monday turned up for the half marathon. Still did not feel 100%. And did not feel very confident as I had not run much in 2 weeks. Went of smooth. Eased back to 7 minute miles in the third mile. Kept roughly the same pace to the end. A bit of a struggle between 8 and 9 but got going to pass a lot of runners in the last 4 miles. Finished in 1:31:07. Would have been up to 5 minutes quicker if I had not had a cold. Looking forward to a faster time at Nashville. SUNDAY 8 MARCHWent to Royston for the Herts Veteran X/C Championships. Even though I was suffering from my Ski holiday I managed to come 37th. I was 10th in the over 50's and with my fellow over 50's from Garden City Runners, first team.SATURDAY 28 FEBRUARY to SATURDAY 07 MARCH
Went to Slovenia. Decided to stay at Bled so I could try a few other Slovenian ski areas. Bled was a great place to stay. Visited the castle, walked and ran round the lake. Photo is of the view from my hotel balcony.
In the evening I went out to local bars with others I met on the trip. Went to the organised quiz night and ten pin bowling. At the far end of the lake is an island with a church on it.
On the first ski day (Sunday) I took the ski bus to Vogel. The ski area is a 1k above Lake Bohinj. It was a beautiful sunny day but the high winds ment a lot of lifts were closed. By the afternoon I was just doing the long 9k run down to lake. When I returned Tuesday the wind had gone and all the lifts were open and I managed to do all the runs.
It was cloudy and snowing Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday I snowborded so the restricted runs did not matter. Thursday was worse with only 2 lifts open. At Vogel I met with Matt and Megan for lunch.
On the second day I decided to try Kobla which was 30 minutes from Bled and 10k before Vogel. It was very quiet. To get to the top there were 3 chair lifts. Even though it was cloudy at the top it was worth the trip to ski the long tree lined red runs back to the village. In the afternoon while waiting for the ski bus I used the bottom drag lift to practice ski drills on the easy blue run.
The ski area of Krvavev had been closed all week. On my final day (Friday) it opened. So I took the 40 minute minibus ride to Krvavec. After taking the gondola to ski area I had a great day. Due to the area being closed all week I had the best snow of the week. And as the cloud cleared there was blue sky and sunshine. For more photos: see PHOTOS page. MONDAY 2 FEBRUARY

Went out on my Mountain Bike. Took the towpath to Hertford and then on the Cole Green Lane to Welwyn Garden City. Then turned north and explored bridleways I havn't done before on the way back to Ware. As I approached Hertford my rear tyre hit a sharp rock and exploded. This left a one inch slit in the tyre and the inner tube. Changed the tube but could not pump the tyre up hard as the tube was pushing out the slit in the tyre. Took a slow ride home and ordered new tyres from Wiggle. WEDNESDAY 17 SEPTEMBER

Went to Guernsey for the Easter Runs. 4 races in 4 days. As I havn't run more than 7.5 miles in over a year I decided not to do the 1/2 Marathon on the 4th day. The weather was cold, very windy and occasionally wet aswell. I hadn't raced for 2 years so took it cautiously. Managed 42:49 in the 10k which wasn't too bad as the times were between 1 and 2 minutes slower due to the wind. Did the 4 3/4 mile X/C on the second day which was windyer than the first day. On the third day I teamed up with Jackie, Dave and Barry (See photo) for the 4x2 mile X/C relay (Very wet). Watched the 1/2 marathon on the last day!

Went Skiing in the Milky Way region of Italy and France. The Hotel was basic. I'll have to chose more carefully if I go to Italy again. Turin Airport is the most inefficient, worst airport in the world. Lack of staff ment over 2 hours of queing on the way back and almost missing the flight. With out que jumping we would have! Luckily the skiing was good. Skied in Sauxe D'Oulx, Sestriere and Sancicario in Italy and Montgenevre in France. Montgenevre was best. France look after their pistes better. Lots of good blacks and reds. Also a great freeride area, including a long gully. Italy was good aswell despite the warm weather and lack of new snow. The only problem came on the last day when high winds close the resort by lunch. Might go back as there is still a bit in the middle I havn't done. I'll stay more central in Sansicario next time. For more photos from the Italy and France, see PHOTOS page. FRIDAY 22 FEBRUARY
